SBCA to Host Ground Breaking Ceremony for New Gymnatorium May 2nd

South Baldwin Christian Academy is set to expand, as we will hold a formal groundbreaking ceremony for a new gymnatorium on Tuesday, May 2 at 12:15p.m. School administrators, local officials and business leaders will put shovels to the earth to signify the start of construction for the 13,400-square-foot facility.

The ceremony will be located directly in front of the school in a marked off area where the structure will be built.

WHO: South Baldwin Christian Academy

WHAT: Groundbreaking Ceremony

WHEN: May 2, 2017, 12:15p.m.

WHERE: 6900 Hwy. 59, Gulf Shores, AL

“After several months of planning, we are looking forward to officially breaking ground,” said Head of School Dawn Cranston. “The addition of this gymnatorium will provide South Baldwin parents who want the benefits of a private Christian education that incorporates sports and fine arts programs with a convenient nearby option.”

This new facility will allow SBCA to make new athletic, fine arts and ministry opportunities available for SBCA students and the community. Designed to serve multiple purposes, the gymnatorium will feature a full basketball court and performing arts stage. Chapel, art, music, theater and athletic classes will be moved into the new facility.

SBCA plans to launch athletic programs in the fall of 2017 beginning with a cross country program. Later plans include intramural and competitive sports programs such as weightlifting, volleyball, wrestling and basketball.

“We appreciate all of our local officials and business leaders who will attend the ceremony to celebrate such an exciting moment for the school,” said Board Chair Robert Mayes. “We also want to thank our teachers, staff and students who will be helping to see this project through to completion.”

The new gymnatorium has been funded through a generous donation. SBCA is looking to the capital campaign of SBCA, EXCEL Imagine. Tomorrow., to help fund the many facility essentials that still need to be provided.

More information will be available about this new project on the EXCEL website at www.excelcampaign.com as updates are released.

SBCA Priorities

To Pin or Not to Pin: A Matter of Priorities

I love Pinterest. It’s a collection of everyone’s great ideas categorized by topics all in one place. When I haven’t gone grocery shopping in a while and all I can come up with is three things at home that might make up a meal, I can Pinterest those three ingredients and come up with all sorts of new recipes. I can also scroll through everyone’s decorating ideas and decide I want a whole new house. Finding the right balance is always the key. I’ve found the same need for balance when making decisions for our school. There are a lot of great schools doing a lot of great things. But what are the great things that are right for South Baldwin Christian Academy (SBCA)? When making decisions for our school I look to see if the choices I make support our mission.

The mission of SBCA has always been to provide a Christian education with academic excellence in a safe, caring environment that allows students to achieve their full potential and discover God’s plan for their lives.

Academic Excellence

How are we doing when we look at academic excellence? I am proud of our students. The ACT, originally an abbreviation of the American College Testing college readiness assessment is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions in the United States. When comparing our students ACT scores with others in the state of Alabama, we far exceed the state average in every category.

                              Alabama                        SBCA

Comp.                   18.7                                 25.2
English                 18.7                                 25.9
Math                      18.3                                 22.4
Reading                19.7                                 27.8
Science                19.1                                 24.2

Safe & Caring Environment

How are we doing when we look at providing a safe and caring environment? Parents and students alike often describe being on our campus like being home, or being part of a family. We are intentional about creating that type of environment. It is our goal to partner with parents in educating their children. We want to equip them, not oppose them. The Institute for Mental Health states that 25% of students ages 13-18 have a diagnosable anxiety disorder. We believe that we can’t affectively educate students or teach them about Jesus’ love for them without first providing a safe and caring environment.

Discovering God’s Plan

How are we helping students discover God’s plan for their lives? Our students know that Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plan’s I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” From an early age, we teach our students that God created them with multiple gifts and talents and as they grow we give them many opportunities to explore those talents and to use them to serve others.

EXCEL Imagine. Tomorrow. Capital Campaign

This year we launched the EXCEL Imagine. Tomorrow. campaign. As we plan for the future of SBCA we look to expanding the opportunities we have to offer our students. Our priorities are:

  • The Student Experience: Campus improvements, fine arts and athletics.
  • Academics & Innovations: What our students have access to in the classroom such as curriculum and technology.
  • Student & Family Ministry: Opportunities for us to minister to our students and for them to serve our community.

You can find out more about EXCEL Imagine.Tomorrow. by visiting our campaign website at www.excelcampaign.org.

Reading At Home

by Dawn Cranston, Head of School

An Issue of Importance: Reading at Home

In 1983, the U.S. Department of Education created its first Commission on Reading to explore the reading decline. The commission’s 1985 report, Becoming a Nation of Readers, included the statement: “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” (more…)

South Baldwin Christian Academy Students, Teachers and Local Leaders to Join Together for National Read Across America Day

Students at South Baldwin Christian Academy (SBCA) will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the sixteenth annual National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America Day on Thursday, March 2, 2017.

NEA’s Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the joys of reading, expects more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.

Local Community Leaders Get Involved

To honor the good doctor and celebrate the fun and value of reading, SBCA will be hosting local business and community leaders to serve as “guest readers.” Books authored by Dr. Seuss such as Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and Fox in Socks will be read to the school’s more than 170 students. The goal is to show SBCA students the joy of reading and strengthen literacy in the South Baldwin community.

December News

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.  He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. – Luke 2:4-7
