Dear SBCA Families,
I am writing to give a report on behalf of the SBCA Board of Directors.
The Board met in July following committee meetings held over the summer. Several improvements were made to the Parent/Student Handbook with the main policy revision being the Bullying Prevention Policy.
The Board also received an update on curriculum enhancements, enrollments, staffing, and plans for security improvements. As many of you will remember, I indicated in past articles and at the Coffee Connection events that work on a plan to improve security would continue over the summer. I appreciate the work of Head of School, William Lance, and Lance Odeneal for their time on this project. A special thanks also goes out to the Gulf Shores Police Department and Mr. Ernie Rosado for their guidance. This plan includes expanding the camera system, new six-foot fencing in specific areas, a single point of entry through the main building, an intercom and auto lock at the main door, and a campus visitor check-in process and software system.
These enhancements were not in the school budget and are being funded by the Mayes family. While such projects need to be supported through additional fundraising in the future, it was deemed that these items needed to be accomplished as quickly as possible for the overall safety of the campus. Separately, the gymnatorium stage curtains are being installed as part of the original construction plans which are also funded outside the school operating budget.
This is a very exciting year for SBCA. Our leadership team has significantly expanded to include a Head of School, Principal, and Dean of Students. This team, along with the teachers and staff, have expanded our curriculum, the athletic program, and have gotten our school year off to a great start.
I look forward to what is ahead.
Sincerely,
Robert Mayes
