The SBCA Buddy Program is a mentoring program in which upper-grade students are paired with younger students for a stimulating opportunity for learning and skill development. The buddy program meets on the first Friday of each month. The “buddies” engage in a number of different activities together. Some of the activities include reading, playing games, projects, singing songs, science experiments, cooking and community involvement. All activities are led by a teacher.
Big buddies model positive and cooperative learning behaviors. As they help little buddies complete a task, they are building friendships and teaching appropriate skills and behaviors. Big buddies experience pride in their ability to be helpful and their feelings of self-worth are enhanced when they see the positive influence that they will have on their little buddy. Little buddies are expected to be respectful, to participate, share, take turns, complete tasks and be good listeners. This is a fun and great opportunity for them to learn new things.
The SBCA Buddy Program is a favorite among teachers and students. Everyone enjoys watching these positive relationships develop during our fun-filled Fridays.
